'We need to make progress on geological disposal'

Everyone has a story about how they ended up in their chosen career. And that includes Cherry Tweed, chief scientific adviser at Radioactive Waste Management Limited (RWM). "It was a chance encounter at a mother and toddler group," she tells Nuclear Future. "I was chatting to one of the other mothers about my background and the following week she came back and said, 'My husband says, as you have done some computing at Harwell, would you be interested in any more?'. He was just establishing a research team to look into geological disposal and so I was involved right from the start. "I moved from code development into chemistry and then safety, and as my responsibilities grew, was able to recruit a team to work with me. The UK was leading the way at that time and so we were in demand to share our experience and I was fortunate to travel to the USA and Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and even Japan and gain a great deal of insight into how others were trying to solve the same problems that we faced here in the UK."
