Development of High-Speed Computer Communications Services for a Multimedia Age: Provision of Public ATM Cell Relay Service

NTT launched Japan's first public ATM cell relay service in September 1995 supported by high-speed asynchronous transfer mode technology. This cell relay service is expected to play a key role in the development of high-speed computer communications and multimedia communications services in Japan in the future. This article outlines the features of this public ATM cell relay service and its future prospects. The protocols and technologies used are described along with the system construction techniques and other aspects.
