Telecommunications and information services are evolving toward multimedia offerings, and multimedia is progressing from a nascent stage to one of growth. These changes are being driven by technological innovation in digital processing, optical transmission and LSIs, combined with the rapid penetration of personal computers (PCs) due to their higher performance and lower prices and the increasing demand for computer network services like the Internet.
