The existence of a potential hill near the surface of a solid is substantiated theoretically. A new for- mula for the Schottky correction to work function is suggested. The formula implies a linear dependence of the correction on an external electric field if the field strength is lower than 10~6 V /cm. Otherwise, it takes on the well-known form. New values of the correction differ from conventional ones by 12/100.
