U S West Troubles Continue

Most telcos are preparing for telecom reform. But across its 14-state region, U S West is still trying to clean up its act. Although it says it's making headway, two states recently cracked down on the Bell once again. In an April ruling, the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC) informed U S West that its service quality has deteriorated so dramatically that new steps were required to encourage it to improve its performance, says WUTC spokeswoman Marilyn Meehan. In 1995, the number of held orders (orders that haven't been installed within a set amount of days) in that state jumped to 1,245. In 1994, the numbers was 412. And through March of 1996, adds Meehan, that number has already reached 379.
