Forming fabric weave-scale variations in paper fines content

During papermaking pulp suspension drains through the forming fabric to create a wet pulp mat. A series of experiments were conducted to investigate the small-scale variation in fines distribution caused by the forming fabric's weave structure. Pulp fines are first separated from the pulp fibers and are then stained with fluorescent dye. The fibers and fines are recombined and handsheets are made on two different fabrics under different drainage conditions. The effect of retention aids on the fines distribution is also observed.
