Tucked in the back of a low-slung building off a highway service road in Mountain View, Calif., is one of the few physical epicenters of the virtual monster that ate 1995: the Internet. Walk past a handful of windowless offices—some of them populated by exhausted program- mers in sleeping bags—turn left at the mountain bikes and enter the eerie, air-conditioned serenity of a small room stuffed with racks of dull metallic monitorless computers.
