Here's how rebec-ca Snyder remembers it: she was walking past the other air-gun shooters to take her place on the firing range. At stake was a spot on the national team and, perhaps, an Olympic berth. She felt good, strong-almost cocky. Her mouth was filled with a chunk of watermelon bubble gum. She sighted down the barrel of her gun and started firing. A solid 90 out of 100. Then a 92, a 93 and a 96. In the finals, where they count tenths, a near-perfect 98.1. "Every time I put the gun up I expected to shoot a bull's-eye," she says, "I was telling myself, 'This is so easy, it's just there today'."
