When he learned about Ennis Cosby's murder, music impresario Quincy Jones had two reactions. One was abject sadness for Cosby, his friend of more than 30 years. Jones was standing by 27 years ago outside the maternity ward where Ennis was born; three months later the two men celebrated the birth of Jones's only son, Quincy Jones Ⅲ. But Jones's second impulse was to worry about the safety of his own six children. Jones's home in Bel-Air is just a few miles from the spot where Ennis was shot to death. He lives in the same mini-fortress of video cameras and unscalable fences that flank most celebrities these days—and that suddenly seemed porous. "If this can happen to Cosby, it can happen to anybody," Jones told NEWSWEEK. "If it's out there, it will get you."
