1966 Newsweek examined how "the supersonic transport age, the surge of inflation, [and] the sag in stocks" combined to depress investors. No one could have known it at the time, but the 1966 slump was the start of a very long bear market, one that did not end until 1982. After that, stocks embarked on an epic tear, one of the greatest bull markets in history, a climb that lasted until 2001. Early this year, a once again roaring stock market was hit hard by the pandemic. Since then, however, stocks have regained all their losses and continued heading higher despite a global recession that could last years.
