Suddenly, Social Security matters to baby boomers. It's the moment any boomer dreads: the arrival of the AARP membership invitation. Rep. Ellen Thuscher of California, who will turn 50 soon, recalls getting hers recently: "You tell yourself, 'There must be some mistake!' " But it's no mistake. She and her generation are in the midst of yet another rite of passage. In this one, boomers for the first time confront the economics of their eventual retirement.
