Squirreled away in the French Alps, the monks of the Carthusian Order are considered by some to be the strictest order of the Roman Catholic Church. They don't eat meat, they don't sleep in intervals longer than three hours and they speak only when the work necessitates it. So it's surprising, then, to speak with German filmmaker Philip Groning about filming "Into Great Silence," a new documentary in which he followed the monks' everyday activities for six months. "These are some of the most cheerful, happy and healthy people I've ever seen," says Groening. "I still keep in touch with them by e-mail."
