Day and night, the seven young men hung out at the rundown Miami warehouse, talking, studying religion and practicing martial-arts moves. They called the place "The Temple," and took turns standing guard outside the door, dressed up in makeshift military uniforms and combat boots. Sometimes they covered their faces with ski masks. People who lived near the warehouse, located in a poor, largely Haitian neighborhood in Miami's Liberty City, wondered what they were up to, and some were suspicious. "A couple of times I saw them out there in front, dressed in their army suits," says one neighbor, a 48-year-old deejay who goes by the name of Tommy Digital. "I said to my girlfriend, 'We've got some Muslim organization around here.' But I mind my own business."
