Coming onstage last week in Pal Joey, Patti LuPone got a wall-rattling reception from the audience at New York's City Center. This was Lu-Pone's first sighting since her dust-up with Andrew Lloyd Webber, who reportedly coughed up a couple of million to buy her out of "Sunset Boulevard" in favor of Glenn Close. It was a fun Broadway moment, and fun is the name of the game with City Center's series "Encores! Great American Musicals in Concert." With soaring costs, spectacles more architectural than musical, and a general crisis in this most American art form, "Encores" is a happy event.
