Now they can joke about it. tonight, R. E. M.'s first American tour in six years begins under a low ceiling of storm clouds at the Shoreline Amphitheater outside San Jose, Calif. The crowd is eager despite the sifting rain, and the band members seem in good humor. Every so often, singer Michael Stipe will turn to drummer Bill Berry and ask after his health. Berry will smile, then fake a seizure and slump over his drums. "We've finally named the tour," Stipe tells the crowd. "We'd like to welcome you to the first show of 'Aneurysm '95'."
