A Plausible Hothead?

If there's any real fun to be had in this early presidential season, it may be in watching the various ways Pat Buchanan slips in the phrase "New World Order" into his speeches. I saw him do it twice last week in Iowa. He did it casually in Waterloo, part of a litany of abominations—ways that America's sovereignty was being squandered. "NAFTA, GATT, the New World Order, the Mexican bailout ..." Members of the audience gasped and whooped, "Yes! Yes! Amen!" Later, in Coralville, he was more direct: "This president of the United States has to stop thinking about some Utopian New World Order and start thinking about America first." Again, cheers. Of course, Buchanan insisted, nothing sinister should be inferred from this. "Read my announcement speech in 1992," he says. "I attacked George Bush's 'New World Order'—globalism, the surrendering of American sovereignty to international institutions."
