Combustion with oxygen instead of air results in a drastic reduction of flue gas volume and plant size and a more efficient power generation. These favourable characteristics may compensate for the additional oxygen cost. Potential applications are the incineration of low calorific solid wastes or improved energy generation from poor fuels. Combustion in oxygen can also simplify or obviate the recovery of carbon dioxide from the flue gas, e.g. if large amounts are required for enhanced oil recovery or have to be disposed of to reduce global warming.
