A process for the production of synfuel or chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass like wood or straw is being developed. First, biomass is liquefied by fast pyrolysis. A dense slurry is prepared from the pyrolysis oil and the pulverised char. The slurries from many pyrolysis plants are transported by rail to a large central plant for syngas generation and use. Tar-free syngas is produced at high temperature and pressure in a slagging entrained flow gasifier. Efficient synfuel production is always coupled with electricity generation.
