I read with great interest the article on the Ohai Railway Board in Observer 364, the December 2020-January 2021 issue. I was very fortunate to live in Otautau from 1988 until 1994. Having an interest in railways I explored the area quite a bit. I remember a Silver Fern railcar running an excursion from Invercargill to Nightcaps and return on 25 March 1990 and also DJ3021 with Southerner carriages which also ran an excursion to Nightcaps in 1988. Below is a photograph I took of the DJ excursion at Otautau on its journey to Nightcaps, I was sorry to see that David Leitch has died - but not unexpected. When we both worked in Christchurch CBD, we frequently met for lunch. Always the same venue, and we ordered much the same every time with the obligatory glass of wine. In the end the waiters didn't bother asking for our orders. They just spotted us and went to work without ever getting it wrong.
