However, these were the days of three-week school and university holidays and, having burned through many rolls of film in Canterbury already, I took full advantage of the break to see as much of North Island steam while it was still possible. During thefirst week in May, just before leaving Christchurch, I photographed A~Bs on the'subbie'runs to and from Rangiora, passing through the suburbs, as well as a C on a shunt near Riccarton. Looking now at my photographs of the C class in Christchurch, I note that they all had larger smokebox doors - like original A and A~A classes, not like their Auckland counterparts and more like the A~B class.
