LIVESTOCK TRAFFIC and SERVICES As a whole, the Auckland Province was slow to develop a meat export trade. The outlying Poverty Bay area might export some 2,200 tons of frozen meat in 1896/97 but the two ports at Auckland handled scarcely more than 600 tons. The railway's interest in this was the 23,898 sheep received at Westfield but accounted for at Penrose Junction. The livestock business of the Auckland Section was, instead, dominated by the provision trades serving the Auckland urban area and, to a much smaller extent, the goldfields. The urban trade was focused upon the major saleyards at Remuera and Green Lane.To them the railway brought 7,347 head of cattle, 75,995 sheep and 1,292 pigs. The goldfields' trade had its railhead at Paeroa where the year's intake was 845 cattle, 8,455 sheep and 807 pigs; clearly, the miners were less tolerant of a diet dominated by mutton!
