摘要

Sadly, it is my duty to record that Jack McClare, one of the foremost authorities on the design and evolution of New Zealand steam locomotives, passed away on 6 November, aged 95. Born in Thames in 1915, Jack inherited an interest in railways, and in particular steam locomotives, from his grandfather Charles Bargh who was locomotive foreman and works manager for the Wellington & Manawatu Railway Company. As a boy Jack witnessed new BB locomotives passed out of A&G Price Ltd works and undergoing trials before delivery to New Zealand Railways. At age seven Jack moved with his parents to Auckland and began schooling there, his education culminating at Seddon Memorial Technical College.
