Obituary - Robert James (Bob) Mann

The New Zealand railway preservation community lost one of its longest standing members with the death of Bob Mann in Auckland on 22 March 2013, aged 84. The elder of two children, Bob was born in Greymouth on 14 January 1929. His formative years were spent during the difficult depression of the 1930s, and he spent much of his preteen years moving between relatives on the West Coast. By the age of 12 he had come into care at a Salvation Army home in Temuka. There, his schooling included music and carpentry, both subjects that were to play important roles in his later life.
