Rail Freight Traffic Flows in 2012

Until 1962, New Zealand Railways published detailed freight statistics as part of its Annual Report. These statistics took the form of the traffic handled at each station, with some division into commodities in terms of timber and livestock, mainly because they were measured in different units. Livestock was in head, timber in superficial feet, and the rest in tons. Traffic that year totalled 11 million tons. The detail in these statistics would tell a very interesting story, but that is for another time.
