Prior to 2009 the Pleasant Point Railway used to hold Thomas the Tank Engine days which were popular with children and their parents. Then the franchise holder of the popular face on the smokebox door decided to ramp up the fees payable and conditions of use for Thomas. The South Canterbury preserved railway felt that they could not accept the new terms so developed their own brand. At Easter 2009 Kiwi the Engine was launched, based on their D-class steam locomotive. In the past four years the Kiwi brand has continued to grow, together with Tana the Tuatara, Percy the Penguin, Polly the Pukeko and the Funny Old Stationmaster.
