Kawerau is the base for forestry related traffic in the eastern Bay Of Plenty region, which provides the main traffic for the eastern portion of the East Coast Main Trunk and Murupara Branch.The KiwiRail yard in Kawerau, located in the town's northern outskirts is the focal point of operations in the region, based in a two-storeyed station building at the yard's south end. Opened on 23 September 1981, it replaced an office attached to the goods shed dating from the around the opening of the Murupara Branch in 1955 and which was totally inadequate for operations for quite some time due to the growth of rail tonnage from Kawerau in the proceeding decades. The original office, and a similar office at Murupara, have been moved and combined as one structure on an educational complex near Whakatane airport. For rail enthusiasts the railway ancestry is easily evident.
