On Saturday 30 March 2013, the Minister of Conservation opened the $5.5 million Timber Trail, running from Pureora to Ongarue in the Pureora Forest Park. The southern section of 45 kilometres from Piropiro to Ongarue is of interest to bush tramway enthusiasts as it uses the formation of the Ellis and Burnand tramway. As an easy mountain bike ride taking about six hours, or a two day walk, the trail is a great way to explore the remains of the tramway. Alan recounts the ride.
