EF or Class 30?

It is perhaps opportune to record how the North Island Main Trunk electric locomotives came to be known as both EF and Class 30. Historically, from the time the J series of steam locomotives was numbered from 1200 on, locomotive numbers began to indicate locomotive horsepower.This system continued with the D~S, D~E, the original D~F, E~W, D~G, D~A, and through to the D~X classes. All classes were given a letter classification.
