There are defining moments in human history where, rather like the appearance of the mysterious black monoliths in Stanley Kubrick's epic 2001: A Space Odyssey, technology has produced a quantum leap forward. Each time we have witnessed one of these 'monolith moments', early adopters have surged ahead to staggering success in the interval between the appearance of such revolutionary tech and that same tech becoming ubiquitous. This phenomena occurs at various scales, small to large, but in terms of those well-known pinnacles of world renown achievement we can see these leaps forward represented by the likes of James Watt with the steam engine, Henry Ford with his factory assembly line, John D Rockefeller with the Standard Oil company, Larry Ellison and the Oracle database, Tim Berners-Lee inventing the Word Wide Web and Steve Job's perfecting of mobile device experiences. Each demonstrates a moment when technology sparked the next great leap in capability and elevated its pioneers to dizzying heights.
