1.1 Explore the secrets of healthy forest soil by collecting samples of soil layers, and conduct tests to identify what was in the samples and if they had the right ingredients for good forest growth. 1.2 Catch different insects in the woods and learn how insects and plants depend on each other. 1.3 Grow baby plants by tending seeds and cuttings, and practice layering, grafting and rooting. Participants even got to take home their samples. 1.4 Perform tree CSI using the latest instruments to discover how and why trees die. 1.5 Use the laws of physics to lift immense weights. Students used ropes, pulleys and levers to lift heavy tree trunks and limbs, some weighing as much as 200 pounds.
