Ten Technologies Could Clean The Environment

In the next decade, advances in technology will produce major changes in energy production and use, consumption of natural resources and raw materials, and the ways in which products are processed and manufactured. The net result will be a cleaner environment-and over the long term, reduced cost to society in coping with environmental problems. At least that's how researchers at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory see the world in 2008. A team of PNNL researchers led by associate director Gerry Stokes have assessed the potential for a number of emerging technologies to have "real" impacts on environmental quality. They conclude that there are a series of developments that in 10 years can begin to have profound influences in diminishing environmental pollutants and improving quality of life.
