The volume of industrial wastes discharged within Japan has continued to increase from year to year subsequent to the period of high economic growth rate that began in the latter half of the 1950s. The aggregate volume of wastes that was about 2,900 million tons in fiscal year 1980 increased to about 3,900 million tons in FY 1990 and to 4,100 million tons in FY 1997.
