'Miracle' jab makes fat mice thin

After a four-week course of treatment with a protein called ob, the fat simply falls off, leaving vastly overweight mice slim, active and sensible eaters. If the protein has the same effect on people, it could be the miracle cure millions have been waiting for. That, at least, is the theory. But sceptics warn that too little is known about the way the human version of the ob protein works to be sure that extra doses would help people to lose weight.
