As this diary goes to press, I am greatly alarmed. At first, like everyone else in Westminster, I had assumed that Roger Freeman, a capable minister who has succeeded David Hunt as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, would also succeed him as science minister. This, however, has turned out to be far from the real picture. Hunt was summarily sacked from the Cabinet, albeit for reasons that had nothing to do with his portfolio as science minister.
