Dammed rivers can have far-reaching effects on ecosystems way out to sea, say researchers in Germany and Romania. In the past 25 years, a dam on the River Danube has caused shifts in the types of algae that live in the Black Sea—favouring species which form toxic blooms that can kill other marine life.
