One of the joys of life for a geologist is getting outside to see the rocks in their natural habitat. When I visit a new area, I crave a map or a guide that points me towards the spectacular outcrops and explains something about their formation and significance. One of the best new guides is Bryan Lynas's Snowdonia Rocky Rambles (Sigma Press, Cheshire, £9.95, ISBN 1 85058 469 9). In a series of walks Lynas takes you through north Wales, evoking a time when poisonous gases spewed from volcanoes and ash filled the air before surging into the sea as hot avalanches. With a little imagination you can see how the landscape then folded and faulted into the form that we see today.
