Gulf war syndrome is a cluster of six conditions, all of them caused by exposure to combinations of chemicals during the 1991 conflict, say researchers at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. Robert Haley, the epidemiologist who headed the team, argues that the new findings are the best evidence yet that Gulf War syndrome is real. "I think this will give a lot of veterans heart," he says. "There's nothing as demoralising as being told nothing is wrong."
