More than 50 years before the Wright brothers took to the air a Yorkshireman called George Cayley, now considered the true father of aviation, had already built and flown the first hang-glider. And the University of Manchester can lay claim to being the place where the atomic nucleus was discovered, and the birthplace of the modern computer. Yet despite its record of innovation, the north of England has a reputation for heavy industry, which it is keen to shed as it looks to a future in high-tech, knowledge-based industries. Now a number of developments are falling into place to ensure this ambition has a realistic chance of success.
