Kaisha Atakhanova's life has been shaped by the poisonous legacy of nuclear weapons testing. Born in the late 1950s as mushroom clouds rose overthe steppe near her home in eastern Kazakhstan, she later pioneered research into the effects of radiation among her people. Today, as a political activist, she is helpingthem fight for their health and environment. This month she won one of the top environmental awards, the Goldman prize, for her efforts. Fred Pearce hears her story.
