The ultimate lab

The view from Malapert mountain is guaranteed to take your breath away. Rocks litter the pockmarked landscape, shiny buildings glint in the never-ending sunlight and giant telescopes loom out of the shadows of the treacherous, ice-filled crater below. Best of all is the sight of the Earth hanging above the horizon. Spectacular as the surroundings are, the astronauts who have come to the moon's south pole are not here to gaze at the view but to knuckle down to some hard science.
