London taxis are notoriously inefficient machines. Their short, low-speed trundles through the heavy traffic of the city centre, punctuated by frequent starts and stops, mean they consume about a litre of fuel for every 8 kilometres they travel.rnDr Michael Lamperth, chief technology officer and co-founder of spin-out company EVO Electric, backed by Imperial Innovations, plans to change that. His team has developed a new type of electric motor based on axial flux technology that vastly outperforms conventional devices, simply by rearranging the geometry of the machine's components.rnSuch an advance has only become possible recently; allowed by both new materials technology and scalable manufacturing processes.
