Cholera deaths are multiplying rapidly in Haiti now that the infection has reached the capital, Port-au-Prince. The outbreak began in the third week of October, and on 7 November the number of known deaths was 544, but the official toll as New Scientist went to press was nearly 1000. "We expect these numbers to continue to rise," Jon Andrus, deputy head of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), the World Health Organization's regional office for the Americas, said last week.
