Suppose a terrorist group manages to get hold of nuclear material, make a bomb and set it off in a city centre. Will the fragments that are left hold clues to who the perpetrators were, and where the fissile material came from? Tests on residues from the first ever nuclear explosion suggest they might. If anyone were to launch a nuclear missile attack, tracking systems would quickly pinpoint where it was fired from. The origins of a nuclear bomb delivered and detonated in a truck, however, would be harder to trace.
