First stem cell trial

Many people have already been treated with stem cells originating from adult tissue, but the trial is the first authorised attempt to treat someone with cells derived from hESCs, the cells in embryos that can grow into all body tissues.rnSurgeons at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, Georgia, injected oligodendrocyte progenitor cells grown from hESCs by Geron of Menlo Park, California, into the injury site. The idea is that the cells will re-coat nerves with myelin, helping them to conduct signals and stimulate growth in damaged nerves. Injured rats treated with the cells recovered some mobility about a month after being treated.
