DURING the second world war, the Germans had a secret formula for fibreglass - used to make fast, lightweight boats - which British intelligence stole and handed on to American manufacturers. By the 1960s, fibreglass and its ingredients had been co-opted to make things like surfboards, cars and artworks. In Los Angeles, sculptor DeWain Valentine's experiments with the material ultimately led him to devise an entirely new recipe. Valentine had spent his career sculpting plastics and acrylics, salvaging scraps from aircraft plants and melting and curing them into geometric shapes.
