In 1950, Turing described what we now call the Turing test. Tothls day, his test isastarKfard by which "Intelligent" machines are judged, and it is remarkable in its simplicity and Ingenuity. Turing referred to his method of determining whether a machine could be called intelligent as the Imitation Came. He proposed that a machine would be intelligent if it could not be distinguished from a human (Mind, vol 59, p 433).
