Just as neutrinos lose their faster-than-light status (see page 4), these subatomic particles have found a new role in a communication system that could send messages directly through the Earth. A team at Fermilab in Batavia, Illinois, has used a beam of the particles to transmit the word "neutrino" to a detector 1 kilometre away, journeying 240 metres through solid ground.
