The race is on. In a few hours, Pluto's shadow will tear across Earth's surface at 25 times the speed of a bullet. Our task: to manoeuvre a jumbo jet through the night sky so that it crosses the shadow's path at the point where we will get the best view of an exceptional astronomical event. And the latest calculations suggest we are going to fall 332 kilometres short. Ted Dunham of the Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, appears worried by the news. "It's an unexpectedly large shift."
