THE healing of the ozone layer could be delayed for decades -ironically by rising emissions of a gas used to make "ozone-friendly" chemicals for air conditioners and refrigerators. While emissions of ozone-destroying CFCs are being curbed under the 30-year-old Montreal Protocol, emissions of another gas called dichloromethane are rising fast, says Ryan Hossaini of Lancaster University in the UK.
