Attaching Hardware to a Tree for Rigging: Cow Hitch vs. Timber Hitch

Many variations of knots have been used on various types of slings to attach arborist blocks, Port-a-Wraps, and other rigging hardware to trees Most commonly arborists use a dead-eye rope sling to secure hardware with either a cow hitch or a timber hitch. This article examines the advantages and limitations of each. The cow hitch is similar to the girth hitch but is formed with a line instead of a loop. It is easy to tie and untie, even after loading. A half hitch usually is added to make the hitch more secure as an anchor point. The working end should be tied off with a half hitch around the standing part so that it forms a "better half," with the tail exiting the half hitch in the opposite direction from which it exits the bight (Figure 1).
